Sayzie Carr was born in Maine. She moved back and forth from Maine to Massachusetts as a child. From her earliest memories she knew she wanted to be an artist. Born into a musical family, it was a given to “draw to music”. Music has always had a strong presence in her work.
Sayzie attended Rhode Island School of Design, and Edinburgh College of Art, majoring in painting. Upon graduation, Manhattan lured her in pursuit of her artistic career. In New York she also studied at the Art Students League. She has had many group and solo shows. She received fellowships from The MacDowell Colony, The Edna St. Vincent Millay Foundation and was granted a studio at PS 122.
In Manhattan Sayzie’s business expanded to various arenas, backdrops for special events, interiors, and costumes. And in 2000 she opened her own Manhattan shop and gallery devoted entirely to her own designs, made with exquisite textiles. The shop featured quilts, fabric collages, pillows, bags, and art.
In 2005 she closed her retail shop and moved to the country to devote herself entirely to painting. Sayzie finds the tranquility and beautiful surroundings of nature very conducive to her artwork. Her paintings are all about the beauty of nature.
She has been particularly fascinated with trees, not only visually but with man’s interrelationship with trees. Watching trees move and grow and the ever changing rhythms and patterns of the weather and seasons is a constant source of inspiration.
