While doing a residency in France and exposed to many different spoken languages — some comprehensible, others not — Sayzie was inspired to create this series of acrylic gouache paintings to explore the complexity of communication. The predominant layers are abstract characters strung together like words and sentences, but the deeper layers consider how and what meaning is conveyed and received beyond the literal — tone, intent, inference, bias, truth, falsehood.
